Tips & Tricks
Have you ever wondered why some foods taste low and some so appetizingly yummy, that we want to devour more and more.
The answer lies in the health of the grain. The array of colours in the vegetable mart dictated by the peppers, carrots, brinjals, lemons, flowers which put the colours of holi to shame, are they all healthy for our consumption. In a country ridden by pollution, and adulteration, can we blindly believe that the grains we take in every day are of optimum health. No we cannot. However, the statistics show that there has been a phenomenal jump in organic farming since 2014 until now. Let me now usher you into the world of ORGANIC FARMING- Natural Livestock and Poultry Production
- Natural Crop Production
- Organic Weed and Pest Control
- Soil Management
GMO – Genetically modified Organisms are a part of our natural farming processes. Organic farming is bereft of the same. Crop rotation, healthy manures, machine tested crops are a part of the organic cycle of farming.
The pillars of Organic farming are health, ecology care and fairness. We all need to strive towards a balanced and sound ecosystem. Health – maintain the health of the consumers, growing healthy foods. Managing the balance of the ecosystem. Care for all and manage all relationships of the producers and consumers in a fair way. Organic farming is a lot more expensive as we cannot afford so much land and water – than non organic farming. The cattle needs to be fattened, and fed more to get organic milk. Conventional may have a larger ecological footprint. Organic farmers can use synthetic pesticides which are less risky. This is a developing norm. We have more debates in future to emboss this farming strategy being the best for biodiversity. Is it sustainable? Will it be ever able to feed such a large population as India? Time to think.

An offshoot of the Mahayana form of Buddhism, Zen – talks about finding peace in inclusiveness. In singularity within one’s individual self. When we blend ourselves into the miniature Zen form of gardening we merge our entire being – both mind and body into the plant life – in a happy blend. A traditional Zen garden, known as karesansu is a minimalist dry landscape comprising of natural elements of rock, gravel, sand and wood, with very few plants and no water. Man-made components include bridges, and stone lanterns, with an enclosing wall or fence to separate the space from the outside world. The purpose of a Zen garden was to offer the monks a peaceful repose to conduct their meditation within natural surroundings. The purpose of a miniature zen garden is to give – peace, tranquility. The zen colours are beige, pink and white and the zen trees are maple, rhododendrons, etc. We can create a miniature Zen garden, with putting sand and crystals, where we plant the shrubs and trees. Adorn the places with miniature buddha figurines. The symbolism of the stones in a zen garden is one of the most important design elements. Upright or vertical stones can be used to represent trees, while flat, horizontal stones represent water. Arching stones represent fire. Stones laid vertically or horizontally are of utmost importance. Stones play and integral part of Zen gardening. We are all part of the same Universe. We are one a part of the entire whole.

Waking up to a cup of hot tea or a mug of black coffee with honey, with a few birds chiming into your ears is pure bliss. Especially in these stressful times. A world away from the jingling world outside a cocoon where you can simply put up your two feet and watch the sky, or perform your surya namaskar, or just day dream merely, laugh with your friends and family – the cosy.
The balcony which is a huge courtyard in large villas or a mere extension or a footage in smaller apartments you can have your little balcony garden. We live within concrete jungles with small un cosy apartments where the balcony is most underused. Either it will be a terrace balcony or an extension of a window. You can use this tranquil place effectively, with lovely indoor plants. Depending on the area and the possibility of the heat remission from the sun or complete blackness, due to the shades, the plants or flowers can be planted. Rose or hibiscus shrubs, rubber plants or palm, marigolds or even a tomato shrub can be thrown around to get some colour in the place.Let’s begin
– Initially talk to your society Manager if you are allowed to utilize the balcony area to keep plants. – Check if the area is completely outside, in the sun, partially outside or completely indoors. The plants will be arranged accordingly. The space will determine the shape, size and true nature of the plants. Before you set up the shrubs, please paint the area in accordance with what you desire. The colours of the walls of the balcony may be white to maintain its pristine nature, or green in accordance with the plants to give it a forest look. Keep a few chairs and a folding table so that a nice barbecue or buffet can be organised depending on the weather. One doesn’t need an entire farm to grow fruits and vegetables, a small space can grow cherry tomatoes or baby apples to give the look of a vegetable garden. Create a natural habitat in the balcony. Let the butterflies, moths and birds come and sit on the flowers. Put a money plant or a snake plant and throw a few carnations and lavenders around for the smell of it.These areas will be visited by bees too so you will bring spring to your doorstep.
